International Day of Disabled Persons 2006

Cambodia unlike other countries in Southeast Asia does not have a clear picture of the number of people with disabilities. However, we are aware that there are many reasons for disability, for example:

  • Extreme poverty and high rate of malnutrition
  • Lack of access to basic education.
  • Limited access to social and economic opportunities.
  • Poor infrastructure and road safety.
  • Poor health care and other social services.
  • Landmines also continue to be significant cause of disability in Cambodia.
People with disabilities are the poorest in Cambodia. They have many special needs, which are seldom addressed. Addressing these needs requires a mainstreaming approach combined with special service delivery.

International Day of Disabled Persons is 24th time in the world and celebrated in Cambodia for 8th time. The main topic of International Day of Disabled Persons is ‘Participate, Protect and Promote Rights of Disabled People’ which selected by Cambodia. This event was purposed as:

  • To promote the adoption draft of law on right of people with disabilities and rights of people with disabilities.
  • To promote understanding of disability issues.
  • To mobilize support for the dignity, right and well-being of persons with disabilities.
  • To promote the integration of persons with disabilities in society.

This event was presided over by H.E. Sok An deputy Prime Minister, Minister in charge of Council of Ministers and Representative of Samdech Hun Sen Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

There are People with Disabilities’ march which included Disabled People, Ministries Relevant, INGOs, NGOs, and students, are over three thousands. This march shows the movement of Disabled People and shout slogan of the event in order to indicate to the public are aware. In the event, People with Disabilities involved sport programme, popular grams and concert until 9:00 PM.
